Casey Edinger at Slackwater Farm in Dameron, St. Mary’s County, is one of the country’s up-and-coming Welsh pony breeders. Thirteen of her Section B and Section C Welsh are registered with WPCSA, and most of those are also registered with the US Equestrian Federation. Her first registered foal was born in 2018; the most recent was born last April. She was the Champion Welsh Breeder at the 2022 Maryland Pony Breeders Yearling Futurity.
Edinger uses a few bloodlines in her breeding program that are not currently seen in many of our Maryland-bred ponies. Two examples are her 2023 Welsh cross Slackwater Mischief Managed, who comes down from Kristin deLuca’s German Riding Ponies in Connecticut; and her Massachusetts-bred broodmare Ashland Ginger Rose, who brings in the Glanteifi bloodlines from Wales and the Gallod pedigrees from Canada.
Edinger’s entry in this year’s Yearling Futurity is Slackwater Missing Pieces by Orchard Hills Snapdragon (SC) out of Cartwheel Ballerina (TX) (Pecan Creek’s Polonaise (TX)), a 2025 chestnut Welsh cross stallion so-named because he is missing part of his blaze and because he has compromised vision in his left eye due to an injury. He will be in the Hunter Breeding Colts/Geldings class. As of the time of this writing, he is standing fifth in the In-Hand Trail 2 & Under division for the Southeast Region.
The WPCSA registry is filling with more Slackwater ponies every year, to such an extent that you can see a distinctive “Slackwater Look” starting to develop. Current registered Section C Welsh Cobs are:
2023 Welsh Cob stallion Slackwater Red Sky at Night, by Dandardel Helios (KS) out of Ashland Welsh Poppy (MD) (Gallod Replica (CAN)), was the 2024 Reserve Champion WPCSA Section C Geldings 2 & Under.
2023 Welsh Cob filly Slackwater Creme Brulee, by Dandardel Helios (KS) out of Ashland Princess Ffiona (MA) (Gallod Replica (CAN)), was the 2024 WPCSA Champion Section C Filly for the Northeast Region.
2020 Welsh Cob filly Slackwater Fleur de Lys, by Wharley Magic Flute (GB) out of Ashland Ginger Rose (MA) (Gallod Replica (CAN)) was the 2022 Champion WPCSA Section C Filly for the Southeast Region. She was also the Best Driving Prospect at the 2021 Yearling Futurity.
The super cute 2025 Section C colt Slackwater Mirror Image, by Lonwind Swagger (GB) out of Ashland Wynsome (MA) (Gallod Replica (CAN)), won the 2025 Champion Section C Colts for the Southeast Region and finished fourth nationally.
Edinger’s Section B ponies are also developing a particular “Slackwater look”: elegant legs and lovely top lines in a rainbow of coat colors. Current registered Slackwater Section B ponies are:
The 2022 stallion Slackwater Fools Gold, by Clanfair Goldrush (CA) out of Cartwheel Ballerina (TX) (Pecan Creek’s Polonaise (TX)), was the 2023 Most Suitable Driving Pony Prospect at that year’s Yearling Futurity.
The 2021 mare Slackwater Ivy League, by Wynbrook Coup d’Etat (VA) out of Loafers Lodge Dreams of Honey (MD) (Fox Cry Whinny the Pooh (MD)), was the Reserve Champion Welsh at the 2022 Futurity and she also was the Reserve Champion WPCSA Section B Filly for the Northeast Region that same year.
The 2018 gelding Slackwater Magic Flute, by Smoke Tree J Maverick (AR) out of Cartwheel Ballerina (TX) (Pecan Creek’s Polonaise (TX)), began his show career this year by competing in the Green Pony Hunters in Florida, in New Jersey, and in New York.
The 2020 Welsh cross mare Slackwater Butterfly Kisses, by Sa-Lyn’s Kensley Trademark (VA) out of Cartwheel Ballerina (TX) (Pecan Creek’s Polonaise (TX)), is in her first season competing in the USHJA 2’3 hunters in Colorado.
The very beautiful 2022 filly Slackwater Forget Me Not, by Blackberry Jammin’ (MD) out of Pyron Easter Signature (OK) (Clanfair Signature (CA)) — seen here ready for her close-up — also started her show career this year, in the 2’ hunters in Florida.
To round out Edinger’s registered ponies, three of hers do not yet have a competition record but we expect that they will soon:
2023 Welsh cross stallion Slackwater Mischief Managed by Pixar (CT) out of Cartwheel Ballerina (TX) (Pecan Creek’s Polonaise (TX)).
The 2024 Section B filly Slackwater Kissed By a Rose by Castleberrys Reflection (IN) out of Ashland Ginger Rose (MA) (Gallod Replica (GB)). She has yet to step out but we’ll be watching when she does.
Fresh out of the oven, Section B filly Slackwater Roulette, by Midnight Crown Royal (NY) out of Maranatha Silhouette (PA) (Rosmel’s Rigadoon (TX)) was born just this last April, 2026.
Come out and join the fun on Sunday at the MPB Futurity at the Harford County Equestrian Center.
