About HSM
Our work grew out of the Maryland Horse Council’s project to track the competition results of sport horses born in Maryland. Maryland Sport Horses compete successfully at the highest level of every equestrian sport discipline — English and Western, mounted and in-hand – and at every level of competition – from local schooling shows to the Paris Olympics.
Our work also grew out of the Maryland Department of Agriculture’s 2024 trade mission to the sport horse industry in Ireland, during which the delegation met with the Director of Breeding, Innovation, and Development for the various Irish breeds in Dublin; an equine genetic testing company also in Dublin; and the Irish Equine Center research facility in County Kildare. The delegation also met with representatives of the American Paint Horse breeders in Ireland and the Irish Paint Horse Club and Treo Eile, which supports trainers who are re-training Thoroughbreds for second careers once they finish racing. The Irish horse industry is strikingly similar to that of Maryland. Read this article from The Equiery to learn more.
